The Department of Materials Processing Engineering
Materials Processing Engineering was established in 1990, under the name of Plastic deformations. Its origin lied in the former Heat treatment Equipment and Technology Department that had a history of more than 32 years. The present name of the department dates back to the year 2002 when the name change imposed due to the extension of subjects and training offer. Prestigious academic staff such as prof. Virgil Moldovan and prof. Ion Dragan –are among the founders of this department.
The courses designed by our departmental academic staff are offered to undergraduates in Materials Processing, Heat Treatment Equipment, Materials Science and Engineering –in the long-term (10 semesters) course and in the short-term courses in the Technical, Business and Administration College, in specialities; like: Small and Medium Enterprise Manufacturing and Management, Metallurgical Process Control (6 semesters). The academic staff teaches fundamental subjects (Plastic Deformation Mechanics, Theory of Plastic Deformation, Numerical methods for Engineering) and specialised subjects (Forging, Forming, Extrusion, Drawing, Wire-drawing, Equipment and Technologies for Plastic Deformations, Pneumatic and Hydraulic Drives, Special Equipment for Plastic Deformations etc.).
The research activity is centred upon non-conventional materials processing technologies, (incremental pressing, die forming, sintering and die forming), simulation – modelling with finite elements methods for plastic deformation industrial processes, tests with hot and cold worked materials and so on. An active promoter research projects, the department has had participations in European research contracts ( EUREKA , INCOCOPERNICUS, CRAFT, etc.) as well as other national agreements and grants or contracts with industrial companies.
